What Is Pubic Fat Pad Removal?

Pubic fat pad removal, also known as ‘mons lift liposuction’, ‘mons pubis reduction’, ‘monsplasty’ or a ‘pubic lift’, is a type of cosmetic surgery designed to get rid of excess skin or fatty tissue from the mons pubis. The mons pubis is the mound of flesh that sits over the pubic bone. The aim of this procedure is to make this mound less prominent by lifting, tightening and reshaping it.

A mons lift can be performed by using liposuction. In some cases, surgical removal of excess skin may also be necessary. The procedure is often carried out in conjunction with a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty.

What Causes A Large Mons Pubis?

There are many reasons why you may feel that your pubic area is too prominent. This area is naturally fatty anyway so it’s not uncommon for fat to accumulate there. However, your mons pubis may be particularly large if:

  • you have gained weight
  • you have lost a lot of weight after being obese or overweight
  • you have been pregnant
  • you have had a c-section

This area can also slacken and droop as you age.

Why Choose A Mons Lift?

If you’ve gained weight, it can sometimes be impossible to remove stubborn fat deposits in the mons pubis through diet and exercise alone. Similarly, if you’ve lost a lot of weight, you might find yourself with excess skin in this area, which can only be addressed by surgical intervention. You may also find that pregnancy, a c-section or ageing has changed the size, shape and appearance of your mons pubis and lifestyle changes simply aren’t giving you the results you want.

Regardless of the cause of your problem, at Manchester Private Hospital, our surgeons will provide you with honest and unbiased advice. At your free consultation, we will assess your situation, let you know if you’re a suitable candidate for a mons pubis reduction and discuss the kind of results you can expect to achieve.

People who undergo a mons lift report a number of benefits. For example, this procedure can:

  • Improve the overall aesthetic of the mons pubis
  • Boost self-esteem and confidence
  • Improve mental wellbeing
  • Eliminate feelings of embarrassment about the appearance of this area
  • Help people to feel more confident about wearing close-fitting clothing
  • Make sexual intercourse easier and more pleasurable
  • Help people who may have difficulty passing urine because of an enlarged or drooping mons pubis
  • Make it easier to maintain good personal hygiene
  • Remove the risk of skin irritation and fungal and bacterial skin infections caused by excess skin
  • Reduce feelings of embarrassment around smear tests and other gynaecological procedures
  • Reduce feelings of embarrassment around professional bikini waxes, laser hair removal, spray tanning and other beauty treatments

What Happens During A Mons Lift?

The type of treatment you will have depends on the exact nature of your problem. If you have excess volume in your mons pubis, this can be treated with mons pubis liposuction. During this treatment, a cannula is inserted into the bikini line and cells are broken down using high pressure water jets or vibrations. Then the fat is loosened and removed using a vacuum machine. After pubic liposuction, you may also require loose skin to be surgically removed, particularly if your skin elasticity is poor.

If you suffer from excess skin but don’t require liposuction, your surgeon will cut away the sagging or overhanging skin with a scalpel and pull the skin to create a smoother body contour and a more aesthetically-pleasing silhouette.

Your mons lift will be carried out under general or local anaesthetic, depending on how much skin and tissue is being removed. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure so you can expect to go home the same day and you won’t need to stay in hospital overnight. The surgery typically takes between one and two hours to perform.

Recovery

Once the anaesthetic has worn off, you will likely experience some discomfort, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. You may also have bruising and swelling in the mons pubis area that may last for around two to three weeks.

After one or two days, you should have reasonable mobility and be able to take short, slow-paced walks. You should be able to return to work after around one week if your job is not physically demanding and does not involve heavy lifting. You can usually resume your usual exercise regime after four to six weeks. In total, recovery can take up to six weeks.

If you’re concerned about how you are recovering or you have any questions during your recovery period, we are on hand to help. You will also be given a post-operative assessment to review your results and make sure that you are recovering well.

Side Effects And Complications

Like any surgical procedure, pubic fat pad removal carries some risks. At your consultation, your surgeon will discuss these risks with you and you will get the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Here are some common side effects associated with mons lift surgery:

  • bruising
  • swelling
  • scarring – you may be left with a scar in the underwear line, in the same location as where you would have a
  • Caesarean section scar
  • inflammation

Complications that can occur include:

  • infection in your incision
  • a larger or more prominent scar than expected
  • excessive bleeding
  • vaginal infection
  • blood clot formation

Our highly experienced surgeons make every effort to minimise risks to your health and will provide you with guidance to help you to avoid complications after your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stubborn fatty deposits in the mons pubis, or excess skin covering this area, can be very difficult or even impossible to get rid of through diet and exercise alone. In some cases, surgery is the only way to address this problem.

Pubic fat pad removal is carried out under either general or local anaesthetic, so you will not experience any pain during the procedure itself. Any discomfort you may feel after the procedure can be managed with pain medications.

The results of pubic fat pad removal surgery are long-lasting. If you maintain a healthy weight following the procedure, you should not experience further excess fatty tissue or skin in this area.

Any bruising or swelling in the mons pubis area should be gone within three weeks of the surgery, and you should be fully recovered within six weeks. If your job isn’t particularly physically demanding, you can expect to be able to return to work around a week after having the operation.

We will schedule a post-operative assessment to check the results of the surgery and see how well you are recovering. We’ll also provide you with a post operative leaflet containing important information, and give you access to a round-the-clock emergency telephone number. This is all part of our comprehensive aftercare service.

The cost of pubic fat pad removal will depend on the type of procedure you need. You can book a free, no obligation consultation with us today to discuss your options.
